Mary Montgomery (1888)

THE WEEKLY EXAMINER AND ISLAND ARGUS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1888

DEATH: MACDONALD-MONTGOMERY - At Naufrage, Lot 43, on the 15th inst., after a short illness of three weeks, which she bore with Christian patience, Mary McDonald, relict of the late James Montgomery, in the 72nd year of her age. The deceased was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew her, for her amiable disposition and many Christian qualities. She leaves a sorrowful family of six children, and a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn their irreparable loss. May her soul rest in peace.

James Campbell Montgomery (1877)

The gravestone can be found on the right side of the cemetery, in the 5th row.

James was the eldest son of James Montgomery and Mary MacDonald. James and Mary had nine children and all were born and baptized in this parish. James and his brother John were blacksmiths and had a shop on their property close to the shore and the Queens Road. The property is located on Lot 43 in St. Margarets, and is still in the Montgomery name to this day. John Montgomery later moved this business to the Bear River Road.

Like many others, James left P.E.I. to seek employment. What I do know is that he married Catherine Morris, she too was an Islander. They married in Suffolk Massachusetts May 26, 1874. They had a daughter Mary and her name is written on this stone as well. Baby Mary died April 16, 1876. Her father James died of tuberculosis one year later May 5, 1877, age 33.

A work in progress regarding Montgomery family of St. Margarets, may be found on the Island Register
