The headstones were sourced and catalogued in October 2009. The original catalogue from 1973 was transcribed to this web site. The names on this page and in this website are as they appear in the sourcing material. For example, surnames with "Mc" often appear in later years as "Mac".
The Members of the P.E.I. Genealogical Society conducted a survey in 1992 and have published a transcript (44-1). Their material follows a different format from the 1973 document. Several of the discrepancies in names and dates result from the weathering and deterioration of the headstones.
Oldest headstone - The oldest headstone found was that of John Mclsaac who died in the year 1812, age 18 years.
Headstone of John McIntosh (1790-1882) - The inscription found on another headstone reads, In Memory of John McIntosh, died December 14, 1881 age 92 years, Margaret his wife died January 15, 1884 age 100 years. His obituary, as found in the Daily Patriot of Thursday December 29, 1881 reads:
Died at his residence at Naufrage Lot 43. Born at Naufrage in December 1790 one of the oldest natives of the Island. Like all the first inhabitants he was denied the advantages of education. He was gifted with good natural abilities, he took a leading part in the land question in all its phases from its first inception in 1831. His greatest and only political aim was to see the odious leasehold system of the Island abolished and for that purpose he was indeed to enter the House of Assembly in 1836 and he continued to represent 1st. Kings in that body until 1851 at much pecuniary sacrifice.
Of Mr. McIntosh's family relations there are some remarkable features which may be worthy of notice. He was married when eighteen years of age to a Miss Margaret McDonald, also a native, who was six years his senior, so that this worthy couple lived a married life of the extraordinary period of nearly seventy-three years during which time death never visited their household. Their children who were all living at the time of his death numbered eight daughters and three sons the aggregate age of the whole family was eight hundred and seventy-two years.
