St. Margaret's, Prince Edward Island, Canada

The St. Margaret of Scotland Pioneer Cemetery, was officially opened in 1803 and served the residents of eastern PEI until 1897. The first Scottish settlers arrived in the area in 1772.

This hallowed ground, which is now designated a historic site, is one of Prince Edward Island's most interesting and historic burial sites. There are many interesting stories connected to the people who are laid to rest in the pioneer cemetery.  

The cemetery is in need of restoration, and a committee has been organized to raise funds and manage the effort.  In this website, you will find information on the cemetery, news on the restoration, and an opportunity to make a donation. 

The Church service over, the funeral procession moved to the cemetery, where Fr. McLellan read the prescribed prayers of the Ritual, the people standing around him wrapped in deep thought. The stillness of the hour was broken only by the ceaseless surging of the waves near by, which seem to keep their vigils over this city of the dead, chanting their solemn requiem till those who now sleep in the Lord, shall come forth to life again.
